Bust of Olav V facing left, King of Norway from 1957 to 1991, surrounded by the inscription and the date 1961.
PSEngraved by Per Palle Storm
Olav V (1957-1991) continued the tradition of using animal and natural motifs on low-value coins, a trend introduced under his father, Haakon VII. The presence of the Norwegian Elkhound on the 50-øre is a celebration of the national animal. This series of coins was in circulation until 1973, when a new design of the 50-øre, featuring the Norwegian coat of arms, was introduced.
