The coin's story
This silver 5 kroner coin was issued for the wedding of Princess Anne-Marie, youngest daughter of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, to King Constantine II of Greece. The ceremony took place on 18 September 1964 in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, the date had been brought forward after the death of King Paul, Constantine's father. Aged 18, Anne-Marie converted to Orthodoxy and renounced her rights to the Danish throne. It was the first wedding of a reigning King of Greece celebrated in the country. In 1967, after the failure of the King's counter-coup against the military junta, the couple had to leave Greece, where the monarchy was abolished in 1973. Sold to the public for 10 kroner, the coin was not intended for circulation, the Royal Mint in Copenhagen struck 359,473 pieces, from models by Harald Salomon.
