The coin's story
This silver 2 kroner coin was struck in 1930 for the 60th birthday of King Christian X, born on 26 September 1870. He came to the throne in 1912 and reigned until his death in 1947. In 1920, after the Easter Crisis, he rode on horseback across the old border of 1864 to welcome the inhabitants of South Jutland, newly reunited with Denmark, an image that made him a symbol of national unity. The Royal Mint in Copenhagen struck 302,640 pieces, following the commemorative 2 kroner of 1923 (the King's silver wedding) and 1937 (25 years of reign). The portrait is signed AH, for Andreas Frederik Vilhelm Hansen, engraver at the Mint from 1908 to 1924, the reverse is the work of Harald Salomon, who became chief medallist in 1933. A silver medal on the same theme was also struck in small numbers for ministers and the royal family.
