The coin's story
This 2 kroner coin in 800 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1875 to 1899 in the name of Christian IX, King of Denmark from 1863 to 1906. It is part of the first Danish decimal coinage, born of the Scandinavian Monetary Union concluded with Sweden in 1873 and joined by Norway in 1875: the krone, divided into 100 øre, then replaced the rigsdaler, at a rate of 2 kroner to 1 rigsdaler. The portrait and the arms are the work of Harald Conradsen (1817-1905), chief medallist of the Royal Mint in Copenhagen from 1873 to 1901, whose models appear on Danish coins from 1840 to 1916. He also designed the Eckersberg Medal of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, still awarded today. The initials CS are those of Diderik Christian Andreas Svendsen, mintmaster from 1869 to 1893. The 1875 date, the first of the series, was struck in 3,396,000 pieces.
