This 10 øre coin in 400 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1914 to 1919 in the name of Christian X, King of Denmark from 1912 to 1947. Instead of a portrait, it bears the King's monogram. It belongs to the decimal coinage born of the Scandinavian Monetary Union of 1873, which divides the krone into 100 øre. Son of Frederik VIII, Christian X came to the throne on the death of his father in Hamburg on 14 May 1912, during the German occupation, his daily rides on horseback through Copenhagen would earn him the nickname of the “rider king” (Rytterkongen). The coin is the work of Knud Gunnar Jensen, chief medallist of the Royal Mint in Copenhagen from 1901 to 1933, who signs GJ. The 1919 date bears the initials HCN of Hans Christian Nielsen, who became mintmaster that year, succeeding Vilhelm Burchard Poulsen, it was struck in 10,184,000 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 30 June 1989.
