Silver wedding of Christian X and Alexandrine (1898-1923).

The coin's story

This silver 2 kroner coin celebrates the silver wedding of King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine, married in Cannes on 26 April 1898. Daughter of Grand Duke Frederick Francis III of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia, Alexandrine had met the future king in Cannes, where her family often stayed for her father's health. The engagement was celebrated in Schwerin on 24 March 1897. Christian X came to the throne in 1912, their son Frederik succeeded him in 1947 as Frederik IX. The coin is classed among circulating commemoratives, and the Royal Mint in Copenhagen struck 203,357 pieces. Both sides are the work of Knud Gunnar Jensen, chief medallist of the Mint from 1901 to 1933, who designed most of the new Danish coins of his time. The initials HCN are those of the mintmaster Hans Christian Nielsen.
