The coin's story
This silver 2 kroner coin was struck in 1937 for the 25th anniversary of the reign of Christian X. Born in 1870, he became king at the age of 41, on the death of his father Frederik VIII in Hamburg on 14 May 1912, and reigned until his death in 1947. During the German occupation, his daily rides on horseback, without an escort, through the streets of Copenhagen earned him the nickname of the “rider king” (Rytterkongen). A fall from his horse in October 1942 left him permanently weakened. Issued by the National Bank, the coin was not intended for circulation, the Royal Mint in Copenhagen struck 208,699 pieces. Both sides are the work of Harald Salomon, chief medallist of the Mint since 1933, and the initial N is that of the mintmaster Niels Peter Nielsen. A medal was also struck for this jubilee.
