Decimal coin. It is the first year in which the denomination changed from “NEW PENNY” to “HALF PENNY” on the reverse. It was demonetised in 1984.

The coin's story

The decimal halfpenny (½p) was the smallest coin in value and size in the United Kingdom. Struck in bronze, it was in circulation from 1971 to 1984. The 1982 date is the first with the legend “HALF PENNY” instead of “NEW PENNY”.
