Private token/model coin (neither official nor legal tender). It circulated as a proposal for monetary reform.

The coin's story

This bimetallic model penny was produced by the Birmingham medallist Joseph Moore between 1844 and 1848 as an unofficial proposal to replace the heavy British copper coinage of the time. Although popular with the public, the Royal Mint declared it was not responsible for its production and the design was never officially adopted as legal tender.
