The coin's story
This large 5 pesos coin in 720 thousandths silver, weighing 27.78 grams and measuring 40 mm, belongs to the series struck from 1951 to 1954, with the head of Miguel Hidalgo on the reverse. The priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla launched the War of Independence on 16 September 1810 in Dolores, with the famous “Cry of Dolores”, captured in 1811, he was tried and shot at the end of July of the same year. The reverse shows his bare head in the centre of a wreath of foliage, and the obverse the arms of Mexico with the value, fineness and weight. Striking in 1954 was halted, as inflation required a new 10 pesos coin of the same size that would have caused confusion. The 1953 date was struck at the Mexico City Mint in 20,376,000 pieces. The edge bears COMERCIO AGRICULTURA INDUSTRIA (Commerce, agriculture, industry).
