Series of 5 centavos of the Mexican Republic (1869-1898)
This small 5 centavos coin in 902.7 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1869 to 1898 by the Mexican Republic, at a time when the country still had many regional mints. The type was struck at a dozen mints, from Alamos to Zacatecas, each identified by its letters: As, Ca, Cn, Do, Ga, Go, Ho, Mo, Oa, Pi and Zs. The obverse bears the arms of Mexico: the eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, devouring a serpent. The reverse shows the value within a laurel wreath, below the mint mark and the fineness. This example bears the mark Go R. 902.7 of Guanajuato. The regional mints closed progressively from 1893, before the 1905 reform that left only the Mexico City Mint.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1 mm.
