Centenary of Mexican independence (1821-1921)

The coin's story

This 2 pesos coin in 900 thousandths silver celebrates the centenary of Mexican independence, achieved in 1821 after eleven years of war. The reverse shows a winged Victory, designed by Jorge Enciso and engraved by Emilio del Moral, with the indication of 24 grams of pure silver. The obverse bears the national arms and the dates in Roman numerals MDCCCXXI - MCMXXI (1821-1921). The coin contained exactly as much silver as two pesos of the time and circulated as ordinary money until 1945, so examples in perfect condition are uncommon. It was struck at the Mexico City Mint.
