Circulation coin of the Isle of Man 1988 series.
In 1988, the Isle of Man adopted a new series of coins with the portrait of Elizabeth II designed by Raphael David Maklouf, in use in the United Kingdom since 1985. Like the whole series, the 1 penny coin bears the name of the island in Manx, ellan vannin, instead of English. Its reverse shows precision machine tools set on a cogwheel. The coins were struck by the Pobjoy Mint, whose PM mark appears below the portrait, and the reverse carries die letters that identify the striking dies (AA to AD in 1988). This bronze penny was struck until 1995, then replaced by a copper-plated steel version with the same design, which a magnet can tell apart.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.4 mm.
