The coin's story

In 1985, Guernsey's 1 pound coin adopted the small, thick nickel-brass module of the British pound, which replaced the 1 pound note. For the reverse, Robert Elderton designed a large calligraphic “£1”, surrounded by ribbons spread out like a fan. The obverse combines Raphael Maklouf's crowned portrait of Elizabeth II with the shield of Guernsey with three leopards, and the edge bears BAILIWICK OF GUERNSEY. In 1988, the Royal Mint struck only 5,000 pieces for circulation and 2,500 in proof. Like the British round pound, this coin was demonetised on 15 October 2017.
