5 pence coin of Guernsey with sailing boats, large module (1985-1990)

The coin's story

In 1985, Guernsey renewed its coins with Raphael Maklouf's crowned portrait of Elizabeth II, accompanied by the island's shield with three leopards. For the 5 pence coin, Robert Elderton engraved two racing yachts under spinnaker, a reminder of the place of sailing in the life of the island, whose waters and the harbour of St Peter Port welcome many yachtsmen. In 1988, the Royal Mint struck 405,000 pieces for circulation and 2,500 in proof. This 23.6 mm module was withdrawn at the beginning of 1991, after the introduction of a smaller 5 pence coin, as in the United Kingdom.
