1 penny coin of Guernsey with the crab (1985-1990)

The coin's story

In 1985, Guernsey renewed its coins with Raphael Maklouf's crowned portrait of Elizabeth II, accompanied by the island's shield with three leopards. For the penny, Robert Elderton engraved a crab, a reminder of shellfish fishing, one of the traditional resources of the island's waters. The 1987 date is the rarest of the type: the Royal Mint struck only 5,000 pieces for circulation, plus 2,500 in proof, whereas the mintage exceeded one million in 1986 and returned to 500,000 in 1988.
