The coin's story

The Tourist Trophy, or TT, is the road motorcycle race that made the Isle of Man famous, held every year since 1907 on the island's open roads. In 1982, the Pobjoy Mint devoted to it a 50 pence coin not intended for circulation. Its reverse, engraved by Leslie Lindsay, shows a rider crouched over his machine bearing the number 10, in a bend, between two laurel branches. The obverse bears the bust of Elizabeth II after Arnold Machin, with the PM mark of the Pobjoy Mint. The ordinary coins bear the die letters AA and were struck in 100,000 pieces, plus 30,000 proofs marked BB.
