The coin's story
This 25 cents coin in 925 thousandths silver belongs to the long series struck from 1870 to 1901 in the name of Queen Victoria, sovereign of Canada since Confederation in 1867. The obverse shows the young queen wreathed in laurel, engraved by Leonard Charles Wyon, the portrait underwent five successive retouchings during the series. The reverse bears the value and the date between two maple branches tied with a ribbon, under St Edward's Crown. The letter H denotes the private mint Heaton and Sons in Birmingham, which struck 1,600,000 pieces in 1874, the other dates came partly from the Royal Mint in London.
