The coin's story

The double was the unit of Guernsey's own small change: 8 doubles were worth one Guernsey penny. This 4 doubles coin was therefore worth half a penny. The 1956 type renewed the designs: the reverse, engraved by Paul Vincze, who signed it with his initials P.V., shows a Guernsey lily (Nerine sarniensis), the island's emblematic flower, while the obverse takes up the seal of the bailiwick with three leopards. In 1956, the Royal Mint struck 494,664 pieces for circulation. It is the only year this type was struck for circulation: the 1966 date exists only in proof. The doubles disappeared with the change to the decimal system in 1971.
