The coin's story
This 14 liards coin in 507 thousandths silver, worth 7/40 of a florin, belongs to the series struck from 1755 to 1778 in the name of Empress Maria Theresa for the Austrian Netherlands. The Austrian Netherlands, present-day Belgium, then belonged to Maria Theresa of Austria, who reigned from 1740 to 1780 and was represented there by her brother-in-law, the Governor General Charles of Lorraine. The obverse is taken up by the Burgundian cross, which divides the value in Roman numerals XIV, with a crown above and the mint mark below. The reverse shows the double-headed imperial eagle bearing the shield of Austria and Burgundy. Both sides are the work of the engraver Jacques Roëttiers. The 1756 date, marked with the hand of Antwerp, was struck in 273,690 pieces.
