Plaquette of John Theodore of Bavaria (1751-1752)

The coin's story

This plaquette in 569 thousandths silver, worth 5 sous (a quarter of a florin), was struck in 1751 and 1752 for the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. It bears the name of John Theodore of Bavaria (1703-1763), Prince-Bishop of Liège from 1744 until his death, who was also Bishop of Freising and Regensburg and a cardinal. The obverse shows his arms of Bavaria-Palatinate under the electoral bonnet, on a crossed crozier and sword. The reverse brings together the arms of the lands of the principality, Bouillon, Franchimont, Looz and Horne, around the inescutcheon of Liège. A variety of the reverse reads PRIN.LEO instead of PRIN.L. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 1840.
