Italy 1 lira 1907 R - Victor Emmanuel III

The coin's story

This 1 lira coin in 835 thousandths silver belongs to the eagle series struck from 1901 to 1907 in the name of Victor Emmanuel III. He came to the throne on 29 July 1900, after the assassination of his father Umberto I in Monza, and reigned until his abdication on 9 May 1946. Both sides were engraved by Filippo Speranza, who had already designed the coins of Umberto I. The reverse shows the eagle of Savoy under the royal crown, with the legend REGNO D'ITALIA (Kingdom of Italy). The 1907 date, the last of the series, was struck at the Rome Mint. The edge repeats FERT, the motto of the House of Savoy.
