The coin's story
This 1 rappen, or 1 centime, coin was struck in zinc during the Second World War. It takes up exactly the design of the bronze coin, struck since 1850, but zinc replaced the 95% copper bronze from 1942 to 1946. The Swiss shield, set on a buckler between an oak branch and a laurel branch, is surmounted by a plumed hat, it was designed by Alexander Hutter and engraved by Jacques-Jean Barre. The coin was struck at the Swiss Federal Mint in Bern, whose letter B appears below the value. The 1942 date has 17,969,000 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 February 1952.
