The coin's story
This silver 200 złotych coin was put into circulation on 30 April 1974 for the thirtieth anniversary of the Polish People's Republic (Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa, PRL). The regime dated its birth to 22 July 1944, the date of the manifesto of the Polish Committee of National Liberation, celebrated every year as the national holiday until 1989. Unlike most silver commemoratives, it was intended to circulate: the Warsaw Mint struck 13,062,041 pieces, plus 6,000 in proof. Both sides are the work of the engraver Józef Markiewicz-Nieszcz, who signs JM-N on the reverse. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 January 1995, with the redenomination of the złoty.
