Millennium of the Polish State (966-1966)
This 100 złotych coin in 900 thousandths silver celebrates the millennium of the Polish State. This is dated from the baptism of Duke Mieszko I, celebrated according to tradition on Holy Saturday, 14 April 966, in Poznań or Gniezno. A year earlier, Mieszko had married Dobrawa (Dąbrówka), daughter of Duke Boleslaus I of Bohemia, who is credited with influencing his conversion. The reverse thus shows the couple behind a shield, with the legend TYSIĄCLECIE PAŃSTWA POLSKIEGO (Millennium of the Polish State). Both sides are the work of the sculptor Józef Gosławski. Put into circulation on 22 July 1966, the coin was struck in 196,859 pieces by the Warsaw Mint. It ceased to be legal tender on 1 January 1995.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.3 mm.
