Accession of Grand Duke Jean (1964)
This silver 100 francs coin is the first to bear the effigy of Grand Duke Jean, issued for his accession. Son of Grand Duchess Charlotte, he had served since 1961 as Lieutenant-Representative, before his mother, aged 68, abdicated in his favour on 12 November 1964. He then reigned for 36 years, until his abdication on 7 October 2000 in favour of his son Henri. Like all the coins of his reign, it was struck at the Royal Belgian Mint in Brussels, in 835 thousandths silver. Both sides were engraved by Julien Lefèvre and Nina Victorine Lefèvre-Kestler. With a mintage of 50,000 and not intended for circulation, it ceased to be legal tender on 1 January 1986.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.6 mm.
