Millennium of the city of Luxembourg (963-1963)

The coin's story

This silver 100 francs coin was issued in 1963 for the millennium of the city of Luxembourg. The city dates its birth to 963, when Count Siegfried acquired, through an exchange with the Abbey of Saint Maximin in Trier, the small fort on the Bock rock, called Lucilinburhuc, he built a castle there around which the city grew. In 1963, the rock was laid out as the Millennium Monument. The coin bears the portrait of Grand Duchess Charlotte, who had reigned since 1919 and abdicated the following year, on 12 November 1964, in favour of her son Jean. It was engraved by Julien Lefèvre and Nina Victorine Lefèvre-Kestler, who sign J.N.LEFEVRE, and 50,000 pieces were struck at the Royal Belgian Mint in Brussels. Not intended for circulation, it ceased to be legal tender on 1 January 1986.
