Wedding of King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie (1964)
This 30 drachmas coin in 835 thousandths silver, issued by the National Bank of Greece, commemorates the wedding of King Constantine II to Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark. Son of King Paul, Constantine II came to the throne on 6 March 1964 on the death of his father. The wedding was celebrated on 18 September 1964 in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, Anne-Marie, youngest daughter of King Frederik IX, was then 18. The inscriptions use the lunate sigma C instead of Σ throughout, a form from Antiquity. The coin was struck outside Greece, in Bern and at Kongsberg, in Norway. In 1967, after the failure of his counter-coup against the military junta, the couple had to leave Greece, where the monarchy was abolished in 1973.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2 mm.
