Centenary of the Greek dynasty (1863-1963)
This 30 drachmas coin in 835 thousandths silver celebrates the centenary of the Greek dynasty descended from the House of Denmark, from 1863 to 1963. Its obverse brings together in medallions, under a crown, the five kings who reigned in succession: George I, elected in 1863, Constantine I, Alexander, George II and Paul. Paul, king since 1947 on the death of his brother George II, was then reigning, he died the following year, on 6 March 1964, and his son Constantine II succeeded him. The reverse shows the map of Greece with its regions and an ancient ship. Both sides are the work of the sculptor Vassos Phaliréas, and the coin was struck at the Paris Mint. The edge bears the motto of the dynasty, ΙΣΧΥΣ ΜΟΥ Η ΑΓΑΠΗ ΤΟΥ ΛΑΟΥ (The love of the people is my strength).
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.48 mm.
