The coin's story

This small aluminium 1 fils coin belongs to the circulating series of the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen), struck from 1974 to 1980, that is from 1394 to 1400 of the Hijra. It is part of the decimal rial coinage, introduced in 1974 and divided into 100 fils, issued by the Central Bank of Yemen. At 0.6 g and 15 mm, it is the smallest denomination of the series. The coins were struck in the United Kingdom by the Royal Mint at Llantrisant. The Yemen Arab Republic, born in 1962, disappeared in 1990 with the unification of North and South Yemen. The coin is no longer legal tender.
