The coin's story
This 2 kronor coin in 400 thousandths silver belongs to the circulating series struck from 1952 to 1966 in the name of Gustaf VI Adolf, King of Sweden from 1950 to 1973. He came to the throne at the age of 67, on the death of his father Gustaf V, and was also known as an amateur archaeologist with a passion for ancient Italy and Chinese art. His motto, “Plikten framför allt” (Duty before all), surrounds the arms on the reverse. The portrait was engraved by Edvin Öhrström, a sculptor and glass artist trained under Carl Milles and engraver at the Royal Mint in Stockholm from 1952 to 1974, who signs with an ö. The 1953 date was struck in 1,009,380 pieces and bears the initials TS of the mintmaster Torsten Swensson. Like other old Swedish coins, it ceased to be legal tender on 30 June 2017.
