The coin's story
In 1991, Malta put into circulation a new series of coins, struck until 2007, on the eve of the changeover to the euro. The obverse bears the arms of the Republic adopted in 1988: a white and red shield with the George Cross, topped by a mural crown and surrounded by an olive branch and a palm frond. Each reverse shows a subject from Maltese nature. On the 5 cents coin, it is the Maltese freshwater crab, the qabru in Maltese, which lives in the island's rare watercourses. The round coin has an eight-sided inner rim, and this 1991 date comes from the Malta Mint in Valletta.
