Series of coins of Macau under Portuguese administration (1982-1985)

The coin's story

This 1 pataca coin belongs to the series of coins struck from 1982 to 1985 for Macau, then a territory under Portuguese administration. The pataca has been the currency of Macau since 1894, and still is. Since 1901, the Banco Nacional Ultramarino has held the exclusive right to issue banknotes denominated in patacas. For the 1982 date, Numista distinguishes two varieties, with “high stars” and “low stars”, according to the position of the stars relative to the towers of the arms. These varieties are attributed one to the Singapore Mint and the other to the Pobjoy Mint in England, but the catalogues disagree on the attribution. Numista gives a mintage of 6,427,000 pieces for 1982.
